In Swakopmund, we partner with local experts offering postcolonial city tours that explore the impact of German colonialism and the Ovaherero and Nama genocide.Through different perspectives and approaches, the tours encourage visitors to look beyond the town’s picturesque colonial façade and engage more critically with its complex past.
Combining oral history, archival research, historical context and lived perspectives, the tours explore sites connected to colonial occupation, genocide, memory and resistance while reflecting on how these histories still influence Namibia today. Led by guides with extensive knowledge and experience working on Namibian history, the tours create thoughtful, accessible and historically grounded learning experiences for both international visitors and Namibians alike.
