New article in 'INDABA Magazine': Why postcolonial city tours matter

What role can tourism play in engaging with difficult histories? Can a city tour become a space for dialogue, remembrance, and critical reflection?

These are some of the questions explored by our founder, Theresa Mertens, in her latest article for INDABA Magazine: "Stadttouren gegen das Vergessen – Wie Nachfahren Kolonialgeschichte und Widerstand sichtbar machen" ("City Tours Against Forgetting – How Descendants Make Colonial History and Resistance Visible").

INDABA Magazine is published by the Southern Africa Documentation and Cooperation Centre (SADOCC) in Vienna, Austria.

The article centres the work of Shared History Tours guide Ningiree Kauvee and our partner Laidlaw Peringanda, founder of Swakopmund Genocide Museum. Through their tours, they create new ways of engaging with Namibia's history by opening up perspectives on historical places, memory, and the enduring legacies of colonialism that many visitors might otherwise never encounter.

The article also reflects on the importance of community-led storytelling and why descendants should be at the centre of sharing histories that have long been overlooked or told from a colonial perspective.
